FISHING FOR LAKE TROUT references The Lady of Shalott (1842), a lyrical ballad by English poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, which was inspired by the 13th century short prose text Donna di Scalotta, which was based on the Arthurian legend Elaine of Astolat (late 5th to early 6th centuries); The Lady of Shalott (1888), an oil painting by English painter, John William Waterhouse; Anne of Green Gables (1908), a novel by Canadian writer, Lucy Maud Montgomery; and Canadian-American actress, Megan Follows, in Anne of Green Gables (1985), a television miniseries by Kevin Sullivan, where the scene in which Anne claims to be “fishing for lake trout” subverts the traditional story of the lily maid’s unrequited love when lovesick Gilbert Blythe rescues Anne Shirley from her sinking dory.

SHINE A YELLOW LIGHT is a portrait of Pat Cronin set against the backdrop of a Nillumbik Shire dusk and the scene combines three of his favourite songs: Yellow/Coldplay, We Built This City/Starship and You’ll Be in My Heart/Phil Collins.

The colours are a nod to his footy team, Richmond FC.; Melbourne’s city skyline twinkles in the distance; the stars, tree and boundary fence glow yellow-gold; and his shirt is patterned with hearts. A silhouette of an owl sits in the tree. “Be Wise,” he hoots. The rural gates are the threshold between the old world and new world, marking both the end and beginning of the journey.

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW is a double portrait I created from a favourite old photo which captured the happy days of young love and good times. I added a rainbow backdrop – because the lady loves rainbows – and a frisson of reflective gold and spectrum sparkle in metallic acrylic paint. It was given as a surprise on her birthday as a gift from husband to wife.

I commissioned a painting from Pascale at the start of 2021 for my wife’s birthday. Communication and quoting process was exemplary. Pascale took inspiration from an old photo we loved and added a personal style that really complimented it well. My wife absolutely loved it, it literally brought tears to her eyes. Thanks for the amazing piece, it will be something we treasure for many years to come!

LIGHT YEARS is a double portrait of Nihal (80) and Theo (4) and explores past and present through three relationships: father-daughter, mother-son and grandfather-grandson.

For the daughter, Nihal has been kind and loving man – a rock, a comfort and a driving force in her life. For the mother, Theo is a precious gift, ‘embryo no. 14’, and the love of her life after many years of anticipation. Together, father and son have brought her infinite joy and light under one shared roof.

However, Nihal’s cognitive decline means that the moments of connection are rare between grandson and grandfather in this space, so there is simultaneous distance and closeness between the two. This one special moment captures both the good times and the memories of better days. A gift for Nihal on Christmas Day.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE is a double portrait of big sister, Bella, aged 3 and a half, and little brother, Alexander, aged 16 months. Bella is shy, creative, clever and loving and Alexander is determined, cheeky and loves to giggle.

Their special bond is captured in a moment of sibling love set among English pleasant pastures green. It reminds us of the joy that children bring despite the stresses of everyday life. Here, the pampas grass waves in the breeze, the lawn is lush and soft underfoot and the sun shines brightly over the trees and hills.

Sand Dunes and Salty Air is a commission inspired by happy days at the beach where the Australian skies are deep blue, the water is turquoise clear and the sand dunes are covered in rainbow-coloured coastal flowers.

The triple portrait is of big brother, Isaac, the noisy leader, who is kind hearted, caring and sensitive. He loves the colour blue, dinosaurs, space, bikes and drills. Benjamin, little brother and older twin by two minutes, is cheeky, cuddly and has a winning smile. He loves the colour green, diggers and scooters. Abigail, little sister and younger twin, is feisty, independent and affectionate. She loves the colour purple, choosing her own clothes to wear, cuddles and unicorns.

March 2020

This Tudor tale of seduction is set in the yew maze of Hever Castle. In the spring of 1526, King Henry VIII is struck with the dart of love, captivated by the charms of Anne Boleyn at court. Anne, however, is already in love with Lord Henry Percy and they are secretly engaged to be married. Under Henry’s orders, Cardinal Wolsey annuls the engagement and banishes Anne to Hever Castle, her childhood home in Kent.

Shortly after, Henry begins to write love letters to Anne, his passionate words depicted in the maze by strewn Lancaster and York roses on the path leading to the centre. When Anne refuses to become his mistress, as her sister had been, Henry follows his heart and loses his head to the addiction, mania and obsession symptomatic of his infatuation. He breaks from the church of Rome so he can marry Anne but her inability to give Henry an heir means that she reigns for just 1000 days. Henry lays charges of incest and adultery against Anne and orders her execution by beheading in May 1536. Martyr, heroine and the most influential queen consort in English history, Anne loses her head protesting her innocence and devotion to the king to the very end.

KAHLODOSCOPE LOVE presents the dichotomy of Frida Kahlo’s world as a kaleidoscope, after her self-portrait ‘The Two Fridas’.

Diagnosed with polio as a child, one leg was thinner than the other and Frida suffered from spina bifida which she disguised with long skirts.

When a trolley accident changed her life forever, the medical student turned away from medicine and towards art. The accident broke her spinal column, collarbone, pelvis, ribs and fractured eleven places in her leg, crushed her foot and dislocated her shoulder. Her uterus was pierced by an iron handrail and was later removed. Her recovery was spent in a full body cast where she began to paint on an easel over her bed.
“I paint myself because I am often alone and I am the subject I know best.” Frida painted more than 55 self-portraits where she painted her pain. She suffered from PTSD, bipolar disorder, marital rifts, miscarriages, alcoholism and depression and she attempted suicide several times. Her right leg was amputated at the knee due to gangrene.

Paradoxically, Frida filled her world with vibrant Mexican colour and pattern and she loved to drink, party hard and tell jokes. She was strong, courageous and vulnerable. When she died, cause of death unknown, her husband, Diego Rivera, wrote that it was the most tragic day of his life as he realised far too late how much he loved her.

White Chocolate Girl is a real-life plastic surgery patient. Her skin is the colour of white chocolate and, like a chocolate bar, she has a shiny wrapper. Chocolate is a luxury item – a reward, a treat, a delight – but chocolate can also be essential for feeling better. A small amount of ‘chocolate’ can change a person’s life by releasing pleasure-inducing and motivating chemical compounds in the brain. We all have individual tastes and needs when it comes to chocolate and the same can be said for plastic surgery; no two women are the same and so each treatment is personalised and unique. The metallic foil acts as both reveal and silver lining.
