July 2020
Acrylic on canvas
76H x 101.5cm

Commission

Sand Dunes and Salty Air is a commission inspired by happy days at the beach where the Australian skies are deep blue, the water is turquoise clear and the sand dunes are covered in rainbow-coloured coastal flowers.

The triple portrait is of big brother, Isaac, the noisy leader, who is kind hearted, caring and sensitive. He loves the colour blue, dinosaurs, space, bikes and drills. Benjamin, little brother and older twin by two minutes, is cheeky, cuddly and has a winning smile. He loves the colour green, diggers and scooters. Abigail, little sister and younger twin, is feisty, independent and affectionate. She loves the colour purple, choosing her own clothes to wear, cuddles and unicorns.

She is crowned with a tiara of cut Billy Button native wildflowers – hardy, butter-coloured pompom blooms on tall stems which resemble small, fluffy tennis balls. Buoyed by the cloudless sky blue and the grassy grey-green which are reminiscent of the colours of Melbourne’s 2020 Australian Open, she knows she has come home.

There is something deeply beautiful and ancient about Australian eucalypt trees silhouetted at dusk and against the night sky. Their forests are dependent on fire as an essential part of the life cycle and regeneration. Ash is the personification of the devastation brought by fire, where her seeds and flowers can blossom in the new sunlight created in the aftermath.
