Long before the fashion runways of Rodarte, my mother had a vivid hallucination on morphine while in hospice care. As she came to the end of her life, an invisible writer spelled out GOLDINFINITY in a gilded hand on the wall and beautiful young girls dressed in roses and gypsophila (baby’s breath) approached. She had returned to her faith. Was this her glimpse of a golden infinity?

Heal Thy Selfie is an exhibition of female portrait paintings which explores the ‘healthy selfie’ through cleansing foods, virtual travel and the gaze.

In 2022, close to 100 million selfies are taken every day while the beauty and cosmetic industries grow bigger than ever, at times questionably regulated. In a selfie, a woman can be both the object of power and hold the power within herself: she is at home with watching herself being watched. And so, when she becomes sick, it is her reflection in the all-seeing, all-knowing mirror that will alert her.

In the health world, we know that chronic inflammation causes chronic illness, meaning that a healthy gut is crucial to both wellbeing and looking well. Global foods, from the wild blueberries of Canada to the celery juice of the Mediterranean to the lemon water of India, have become sweeping staples in the recovery from toxins in the body. In Heal Thy Selfie we can enjoy the escapism to far flung corners of the world where these foods have their origins, at a time when international travel is greatly reduced.

Pascale looks to her own 5-year experience with chronic illness which caused the malfunction of her immune system in a cytokine storm: Breast Implant Illness (BII), after prophylactic mastectomy and reconstruction. She uses the many posted before/after selfies to inform the painted ‘after’ following explant to flat.

Sad Mad Bad Behaviour explores the guiltless, superficial and pleasure-seeking charms hiding the cold brutality of star linguistics university student, lethal female assassin and predatory psychopath, Oxana Vorontsova, aka Codename Villanelle. British author Luke Jennings’ novel by the same name was the basis for subsequent spy thriller television series, Killing Eve, where Villanelle is played by English actress, Jodie Comer.

Black Treetops Blossom

There is something deeply beautiful and ancient about Australian eucalypt trees silhouetted at dusk and against the night sky. Their forests are dependent on fire as an essential part of the life cycle and regeneration. Ash is the personification of the devastation brought by fire, where her seeds and flowers can blossom in the new sunlight created in the aftermath.

A number of Victoria’s finest Art Societies come together at the show to exhibit and sell their beautiful pieces of work. The artists are on site throughout the five days of the show to assist with any questions you may have, and explain the motivation behind their work. Head upstairs in the Great Hall of Flowers to Thou Art Mum and pick up an original piece of art. All artwork is available to be purchased and taken home on the same day. Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show

Bougainvillea is an ornamental plant which loves light and warmth. A flowering machine, it blooms in a fiery explosion of colour and is hardy, tough and versatile. A closer look reveals that its heart-shaped leaves are paper thin and its scrambling branches are full of thorns.

Near Wild Blooms explore strength and vulnerability and reflect upon Briar’s past (1), present (2) and future (3).

Lovers, Idols, Heros. I See You is an exhibition creating a window to the soul. Artists are asked to provide portraits of the subjects they care about, be they those they hold dear, or those they idolise completely.

Instant Orange Crush is inspired by sun worship, the beach sunsets of oversized 1980s wallpaper posters and the overblown pop love songs by empowered diva heroines of the same decade. It explores the nostalgia we feel for past loves through rose tinted sunglasses and questions the idea that nothing gold can stay.

The Underdog explores both the way a woman sees herself and the way she is perceived at the end of mastectomy and reconstruction, whether the surgery is prophylactic or due to breast cancer. The censorship by social media of breasts, and nipples in particular, negatively impacts upon the visual resources available to 1 in 8 women with a need to know. Attitudes to baring all in a show and tell motion are being slowly, proudly and positively broken down by a host of empowered, self-proclaimed topless activists and cancer warriors.

This painting is part of the series, Stay Gold, where the story and the memory become as beautiful and as valuable as the gold in a sea of nuggets. In this case the scars are the stories and the gold celebrates staying true to yourself. The pink represents all women impacted by breast cancer.
