[STAY GOLD series]

Acrylic on canvas (unframed)

February 2018

Heathcliff, it’s me, Coralie. Come home, I’m so cold. Let me in through your window. ~ Kate Bush

So, millenials, before Lorde there was Kate Bush. Things I have in common with this babooshka: born in Kent, went to school in Ashford, lived in Eltham (London, Straya… whatevs), read Wuthering Heights, and became the first female artist to achieve a UK number one with a self-written song, aged just 19. Last one just Kate actually. Also technically 1978.

The woman with burning sunset eyes is called Coralie. At first I thought Coral because it sounds a bit Eighties, but I think she’s on a French beach in the Med so… you know. Then I googled it: “Coralie” is a popular 19th century jewel baby name from the name of the pink semi-precious sea growth used to make jewellery and ornaments. Cha-ching! We’re on the same page.

INSTANT ORANGE CRUSH is inspired by sun worship, the beach sunsets of oversized 1980s wallpaper posters and the overblown pop love songs by empowered diva heroines of the same decade. It explores the nostalgia we feel for past loves through rose tinted sunglasses and questions the idea that nothing gold can stay.

This painting has been powered by Whitney, Tina, Annie, Madonna and Kate.

I See You opens 6-8pm on Thursday 1 March at Incube8r Gallery, 321 Smith Street, Fitzroy. A group exhibition focussing on portraiture, the theme explores Lovers, Idols, Heros: a window to the soul. Artists provide portraits of the subjects they care about, be they those they hold dear, or those they idolise completely. Exhibition runs until 13 March.

RICK ASTLEY (2017)

TOP OF THE POPS series

We’ve known each other for so long. (40 – 30 = 10)

And if you ask me how I’m feeling don’t tell me you’re too blind to see. ~ Rick Astley.

So this is 40 and this is my guilty pleasure dated 1987 (a favourite year of mine), voted one of the all-time worst songs ever! But do you know what, who cares? If it makes you feel better then play it. Play the shit out of it until you feel better.

I’ve been wading through a tide of nostalgia to get to this big number and it’s been sucking on all my energy. Five months ago I was lying in hospital with a tube stuck down my throat, starving, in pain, and thinking I might not make it to 40 after all. Off the back of the new boobs that came as a real shock! (I’m still in shock. Or is it trauma?)

But mostly I’ve been thinking about Mum, I can’t help it. Feeling sad for her, feeling guilty that I’m here and she’s not. Thinking about her very rude 40th birthday cake. Laughing. Thinking about how she was diagnosed with breast cancer just one month later. Teary, usual. I know this is a celebration for myself but, damn, it’s so hard to shake her off!

Anyway, I’m here, where she’d want me to be, and it’s bloody brilliant to be alive and drawing and painting and playing music. Plenty of other things, too, but hopefully this is the medicine to take me through the next decade. So if anyone’s feeling nostalgic with me, pop the bubbles and call on Mr. Astley (he’ll be around) coz I don’t think I’m ever gonna give it up.

TOP OF THE POPS series (2016)

This woman has Braveheart blood, can walk on broken glass, wears a suit and tie and has short hair. She also hails from Aberdeen, the silver city by the sea, where my dad utilised his baby boomer university grant playing cards, plagiarising and wooing women (as far as I can tell!). As I can only assume she is made of granite I’m going to pray to the Scottish Patron Saint Annie of Lennox (Eurythmics) for strength.
