This is Julie-mermie, otherwise known as talented Melbourne artist and jewellery maker Fickle Nellie. She is just as beautiful as a mermaid as she is in real life. (Maybe not quite so pale.)

Inspired by Shirley-mermie, SNARE, this commission was a joy to complete. It is also a surprise gift for Julie’s wedding anniversary: yes, she is his fintastic catch of two decades!

It’s interesting that I chose a background of lavender and this nursery rhyme because her mother would sing it to her when she was a baby! I changed the words to fit Matilda, a sweet little commission finished in time for a new bedroom in a new house this Christmas. This little girl loves purple and pink. She’s now 18 months older from when I started (I can explain!) so I tried to add a little age to her face. As ever with these things, she looks better face to face rather than face to screen.

This underwater love was commissioned by a husband as a surprise birthday present for his wife. She had really liked Sink Back Into The Ocean 1, an underwater mermaid, sold at Thou Art Mum Green With Envy exhibition in August 2017. Together we worked on finding an image he thought she would connect with and then a little bit harder on keeping it a secret!

Between us Dad and I rack up 110 years today! Wowsers! That is GOLD.

So what do you draw for your old man who has many different obsessions? (YES, like father like daughter. Different obsessions though.) Wild roaming animals from the African plains? Zulu warriors? Native Americans? WW1 soldiers? And I’m hardly scratching the surface here.

Then I remembered the countless Westerns I sat through as a kid and I thought of that famous Dad joke, “Fastest Banana in the West” – the one where you draw your banana from your hip as quickly as possible in a tense banana shootout.

Sink Back Into The Ocean 1 & 2 are acrylic paintings inspired by mermaids, even though you can’t see any evidence of their tails. They explore feeling vulnerable but protected all at the same time – a state of sinking and floating.

I met many amazing women at a Pink Hope hereditary breast and ovarian cancer conference in June 2016 and one of them was Brione. She told me about her mum, Valerie, who died of breast cancer aged 48 (diagnosed at 40). Brione told me then that she would like a drawing of her mum and I promised her that I would do it. 

I was really moved by Brione’s story again on Mother’s Day, 2017, when she described the occasion in a short video clip for Pink Hope as “champagne and razor blades”: champagne for her children, razor blades for the memory of her mother. I think this perfectly sums up how so many “Pink Hopers” feel. 

We chose a photo that was special to Valerie taken in the mid-1980s to work from. I didn’t know Brione’s mum and so I asked for a list of her big loves to help me to make a connection. 

THE MEMORY OF VALERIE 

“She was kind, loving, supportive, humorous, friendly, with a spoonful of stubbornness. She loved crafty things like crocheting, knitting and sewing and sold her creations at craft markets. She won a beauty competition when she was pregnant. She was a West Coast Eagles supporter, loved playing bingo and the poker machines at the casino. She also loved the colour purple and eating liquorice.” 

I will never know if I’ve truly captured this lovely lady as Brione remembers her (that’s the tricky part) but I hope there’s something in this pencil portrait that can’t be found in a photo which will last forever.
